How does this work in practice?
On a typical morning at Locomotiva di Momo, you might listen to a story in Italian and English, go out to the park to collect leaves, have a go at modelling clay, and enjoy a leisurely lunch together, whilst learning to do a little more on your own each time.

A history of research and accolades
Founded in 1996 by Cinzia D’Alessandro, now founder and Head of Education at Becoming Education, Locomotiva di Momo works on an ongoing basis with the University of Milan-Bicocca and is the subject of a dedicated research project by the Department of Education.
She has received recognition from public institutions and was honoured by the Bambini e Natura association for her commitment to promoting the link between education and nature. It was from this experience that the Becoming Education project was born.
Natural bilingualism
At Locomotiva di Momo, Italian and English coexist every day, right from the moment children start nursery. These aren’t language lessons: the children explore, play and discover the world through two languages, each at their own pace.
Native English-speaking and bilingual teachers work alongside native Italian-speaking teachers throughout the day, ensuring a balanced mix of Italian and English. Each member of the teaching staff speaks to the children in only one language.
This approach makes learning spontaneous and natural, without any pressure.
Outdoor education
Nature is a valuable learning environment. Going outdoors is a right that children have, and for us it is an integral part of our educational programme.
Children learn to look after the environment when they feel they are part of it. Every trip to the park, every neighbourhood get-together, every moment spent in the vegetable garden creates a genuine connection with nature and the local area: a sense of belonging, curiosity and respect.
Every day, we strive to organise regular and safe outings: to Formentano Park (our Via Anfossi centre), in our garden (our Via Tolstoi centre) and in the neighbourhood’s gardens, shops and streets – because the city is a place to explore and love.
Educators undergoing continuing professional development
The educators at Locomotiva di Momo are constantly engaged in research, training and pedagogical supervision. This professional development is reflected every day in the quality of the experiences offered to the children.
Through the Becoming Academy, our team takes part in training courses, workshops and opportunities to exchange ideas with experts from the world of education. Because looking after those who educate means looking after the children.
Pedagogical supervision
At Locomotiva di Momo, there is a permanent and consistent educational figure who supports educators, families and children on their journey of growth.
The educationalist analyses educational contexts, supports curriculum planning and strengthens the educational partnership based on shared responsibility between school and family, with the common aim of helping every young person to grow into an informed citizen.
